I am always getting asked, “Emily, what should I be doing for Medicare, and when should I start?”

Today, I want to share this critical step with you because doing this one thing early on can make the entire process so much easier. And it can also help you find some of the red flags early.

Talk to your doctors about the type of Medicare they do or do not accept.

There are two main programs to go through when it comes to Medicare.

Original Medicare

Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B, and then you will also get a Medigap plan and a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans include Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B, and usually a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. You don’t get a Medigap plan when you’re on this path.

Medicare Advantage plans also come with their own network of doctors that you can choose from, so knowing this beforehand can help you make the right decision.

Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage are two very different paths, so asking your doctors which of these two they accept will make your life so much easier when deciding what plans to get.

More importantly, if you ask your doctor what type of Medicare they accept, and they say we don’t take any Medicare, you know that you need to find new doctors before joining Medicare.

So by asking your doctors this important question, it makes your decision easier, and also helps you find some of those red flags early on.
