Am I eligible for a guaranteed issue Medicare Supplement insurance policy when I leave my Medicare Advantage plan?
Answer:
You may apply for a guaranteed issue if you meet the following criteria: (guaranteed issue means you get the coverage regardless of health issues.)
- If you join a Medicare Advantage plan when you first enroll in Medicare and leave the plan within the first 12 months of joining.
- If you terminated a Medicare supplement policy to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time, then leave the plan within 12 months of enrolling.
- If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan that is leaving your service area or the Medicare program altogether.
Note: There are a significant number of health insurers leaving the Medicare Advantage market, so keep up to date on your options regarding your insurable status if you are currently on an Advantage plan and want to return to Original Medicare.
