Medicare Part B is one of the two most critical parts of Medicare. You will join Medicare Part B whether you go down the Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage path.

Learn more about Medicare Part A.

Medicare Part B covers most of what you will need when it comes to your outpatient healthcare.

Part B covers:

  • Doctor’s office visits
  • Labs and x-rays
  • Durable medical equipment (DME)
  • ER visits that don’t result in hospital admission
  • Ambulance services
  • Outpatient hospital charges
  • Home Health
  • Anything not considered inpatient and not a drug you pick up from the pharmacy
  • Medications that must be administered by a medical professional (chemotherapy)

Medicare does have a complete list of the services that they will cover on their website

It’s also important to know that Part B only covers 80% of the cost of these services.

The remaining 20 %, most of you will either get a Medigap plan or a Medicare Advantage plan.

Part B in 2024 is $174.70 a month for most people. If you have a higher income, you will pay an additional surcharge on top of this base premium.

To get more information on the income levels and surcharge amounts, read our blog on IRMAA & Medicare

It is critical to note that you will ALWAYS pay the Part B premium no matter the path that you take.

Far too often I see Medicare Advantage being advertised as “free” and people do not realize this does not get them out paying that premium. You will still have to pay.
